Just Call Me Farmer
Well, it's about time. I have been thinking about adding to my blog but needed the dig from the mother-in-law to get my but in gear, not to mention that everyone else has updated. I think I might be the furthest behind now, well next to my wife. This fall I was given an opportunity of a life time. I was asked by a farming friend, Don, to help out with Harvest this year. I was excited to be able to help him out. He asked me to help out one day a few years back and I was already booked to do something and was disappointed that I couldn't help him out. I started out at the farm doing some carpentry. I lined some old wooden grain bins with some plywood to give them a few years. Steve, Don's last hired help, gave the bins a fresh coat of paint to them last year. This year, one got it's guts redone and a new roof. Next spring, I'm sure the other one will need some help.Harvest went well. We got all of the crop in before the frost hit. There were a few weeks that we lost due to some mechanical work on the combine and some rain but we got her done. The last few fields of wheat went down in their grade due to the rain, but since it seems that this year was a good year for wheat, the price for feed wheat went up. I was given the keys to "Henry", a 1976 Ford 2 ton, and he became my newest friend. I love driving truck. Henry is a comfortable ride but sometimes lacked the pulling power he'd like to have. Don also has a 3 ton, "Big Blue", which I took out to the field once. Now there was a truck! Besides lacking it's power steering and comfort that Henry has, it has the tranny and power! Don has asked me to help out with seeding next year. I'm looking forward to helping him out then.I also attended a farm auction with Don on a rainy Saturday a couple of weeks back. Don ended up purchasing a new tractor and some discors to pull with it. I like auctions, but I often have to sit on my hands before I get involved. Luckily I didn't have a number otherwise who knows maybe I would have bought the Ford 3 ton just to drive around town. Now there is fuel economy!
